The Importance Of Eating Fruits And Vegetables
Posted on June 3rd, 2015 by Chips Restaurants
Just like that it is already June – can you believe how quickly the time went? We sure can’t, it feels like just yesterday our streets were covered with snow! But since it is finally June, we’re celebrating National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month and hope that you will too!
Before we get into healthy food options to choose throughout the month of June (and the rest of the summer – that’s coming later this month!) we’d like to take some time to discuss the importance of fruits and vegetables and explain why they should be incorporated into your meals each and every day.
So why all the fuss over eating your greens? Well, first and foremost, vegetables are low in fat and calories just by nature. Furthermore, they are a great source of potassium and vitamins A and C! Since the right levels of potassium can help regulate blood pressure, and since fiber helps to reduce cholesterol levels, it seems only obvious that vegetables should be a part of your diet! Not to mention, eating vegetables regularly may lower your risk for heart disease, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.
Now on to fruits – an apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? That may be so, but why? Why should you follow a diet rich in fruits? Like vegetables, fruits are generally low in fat and calories, and are also low in sodium. They too are also a great source of nutrients, and therefore help with a variety of biological processes. By making fruits a staple of your diet, you may lower your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and may even lessen your chances of developing kidney stones.
When it all comes down to it, fruits and vegetables are essential because they aid in keeping you healthy by providing the minerals and nutrients your body needs to thrive. They can also help boost your immune system and even make you feel full for a longer amount of time simply due to the fiber they contain. And last but not least, by eating right, we bet you’ll even feel like you have more energy throughout the day – what’s better than that?
Now that you are familiar with why foods of this sort are so important, we hope you’ll pick up a few of each the next time you head to the grocery store. Which fruits and veggies are your favorite?
