Healthy Foods To Eat This Summer
Posted on June 17th, 2015 by Chips Restaurants
At the beginning of the month, we went through the importance of eating fruits and vegetables since June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month! And although the month is already half way over, there is still plenty of time left to celebrate – especially today! Did you know that June 17 is also known as National Eat Your Vegetables Day?
Since we’re on the topic of eating healthy, and considering that the first day of summer is just a few days away, we’re dedicating today to sharing some of our favorite healthy foods that you can indulge in this season; check them out below:
Corn: Looking to add something extra to your BBQ but aren’t sure what? Go for corn on the cob! According to EatingWell, the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin are present in corn, both of which can help your body fight the sun’s rays. In fact, they can also lead to a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration, which is a common cause of blindness in individuals over 60 years of age.
Tomatoes: Like corn, tomatoes can also help you protect yourself from the sun. That being said, not only are they a tasty treat that can accompany your lunch or dinner, but they are also a great way to keep your skin healthy when the sun is shining – that’s the best of both worlds if you ask us!
Watermelon: Of course drinking water is necessary in the summer to stay hydrated when the temperatures rise, but did you know you can hydrate by eating watermelon too? Since watermelon is 92% water just by nature, it’s a great source of fluids!
Blueberries: Blueberries are great at any time of the year, but they can be especially helpful in summer since you might be exercising more. As explained by EatingWell, “the antioxidants in them may help ward off muscle fatigue by mopping up the additional free radicals that muscles produce during exercise.” Therefore, if you’re spending much of your time outdoors (whether by running or biking, for example) consider some blueberries later in the day!
Raspberries: Another berry, raspberries are an excellent source of fiber – did you know that one cup of raspberries alone contains 8 grams of this important nutrient? If you’re looking to stay in shape this summer, raspberries can be a great addition to your diet – they may even promote weight loss!
Now that you have this list of healthy foods, we encourage you to incorporate them into your meals as often as possible. Which will you start with first? Be sure to visit us on Facebook and let us know, and be sure to share your other favorite summer foods as well!
