How To Make Irish Soda Bread

Posted on March 15th, 2016 by Chips Restaurants

You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy a delicious piece of Irish soda bread, but if you’re looking for an excuse to make it, this Thursday is a pretty good one – it’s St. Patrick’s Day, of course! And the best part is, it’s super easy, you just need a little bit of time that you can dedicate to the kitchen.

For those of you looking to get a taste of Ireland this week, give the below recipe a try.

Ingredients

Before you can get started, collect the following ingredients:

  • Flour
  • White sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Baking power
  • Salt
  • Margarine
  • Buttermilk
  • 1 Egg
  • Butter

Once you have all of these at your fingertips, move forward with your baking by following these steps:

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, and lightly grease a baking sheet so that it’s prepared for baking.

Step 2: Mix together the following ingredients in a large bowl: 4 cups of flower, 4 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 cup of softened margarine. If you’d like, here is where you can also add some raisins.

Step 3: After the above ingredients have been mixed, add 1 cup of buttermilk and 1 egg and stir.

Step 4: Take the dough from your mixing bowl and place it on a lightly floured surface. Once it’s out, start to knead it slightly. As you go about doing so, form it into a nice round shape.

Step 5: In a smaller bowl, mix 1/4 cup of melted butter and 1/4 cup of buttermilk together.

Step 6: Place your dough on your baking sheet and brush a nice layer of the mixture made in step 5 over it.

Step 7: Bake your Irish soda bread for approximately 45-50 minutes. However, you should start checking on it at the 30 minute mark, and feel free to add some more of the mixture from step 5 if you so desire.

Step 8: Let cool and enjoy!

Like we said, you don’t have to actually be Irish to enjoy a nice loaf of Irish soda bread – it’s the perfect snack for everyone to munch on! Will you be making some this week? If you do, be sure to let us know how it comes out by visiting us on Facebook!
