Are you stuck on a poor eating schedule? Find yourself waiting til almost lunch time to eat your first meal of the day? Waiting until after 8 or 9 at night to eat dinner? We understand that not everyone will be able to eat their meals at the ideal times, but there are a few general rules of thumb to follow to make sure your body is getting the most out of what you’re putting in it:
Generally speaking, it’s best to eat breakfast 1-2 hours after you wake up. The word breakfast literally means “breaking a fast” and if you go too long without putting nutrients into your body, it can be bad for your metabolism and your health. You may not be starving the second you open your eyes in the morning, but eating at least something within the first few hours is key.
Since breakfast should be your largest meal of the day, you may not be hungry for a few hours and that’s totally fine. It’s recommended to eat lunch approximately 4-4.5 hours after breakfast to keep your body fueled for the remainder of the day.
Your dinner schedule should depend on what time you go to sleep each night. Eating too close to bedtime could lead to a bad night’s sleep and eating too early could cause you to go to bed hungry. The sweet spot for dinner is typically around 3 hours before it’s time to turn out the lights.
That being said, don’t forget that you should be eating when your body says it’s time to. If you feel like you are heading to the kitchen just because the clock says you should be, you could be harming your health.
